My style of decorating
I'm looking forward to the fall. I remember when I was little and the leaves would start to fall from the trees. I would run outside and soak it all in. I love to open my old windows, watch the curtains blow in the wind and smell the fresh breeze through the house. At our other house we had a property across the street that was empty and at some point during fall the lightning bugs would be everywhere. Sitting on the porch watching the kids try to catch them and put them in a jar was pretty cool.
I've enjoyed this last year in the new/old house. Everything in my home is neutral in color because I have a lot of stuff. I figure it makes it look less cluttered that way. If I had a bunch of stuff in lots of different colors, my home would look like a circus.
I learned a trick several years ago. I have very pale skin and learned that painting my walls in warm cream and white colors and decorating in dusty reds, greens, taupe and cream actually makes my skin look nicer. You get this nice warm glow. Coarse it helps to still have makeup on. But hey....every little bit helps, right? :)
My home is full of mismatched furniture and nothing is new or even in great repair.
I use a lot of lace runners and doilies. It seems to help make all the different shades of wood furniture work together in one room when there's a white runner under the photos, baskets, etc. You also don't see the dust as easily. My style of decorating is very shabby chic. I'm far from modern. My favorite way of describing something in my home is when I call it "marshmallowy". If it looks "marshmallowy" then.....IT'S ME BABY. Since I live in, what looks like, an old farm house, my style seems to fit well I think.
I love to make things out of old stuff that you would never think to use. One day our neighbor threw out an old 5 panel wood door and I asked my husband to help me make it into a headboard for our king sized bed. It was a successful and very cool project. If you walk into my bedroom and see my headboard, you don't know it's a door. You can see the headboard in this picture. I get a total kick out of recycling stuff into something cool.
I love when there is a story behind the things in my home.
