saving money and recycling part 2
I really wish I was better at posting more often. Not that anyone is all that upset that I don't have a new post every day, just the fact that I enjoy it.
Since I have to stay off my foot a bit due to a sprained ankle...what better time to post something.
Last post was about saving money. I wanted to post a part 2 of what we do to save money, but I don't want it to be boring. So I'll try to make it shorter and more entertaining. :P
I love to recycle and re-use, obviously. When I see my trash leave the house, I think of the impact it makes on the landfill. (a HUGE man made mountain)
I feel I should do my part, it makes me feel better.
So.....
I wrote a list of all the things we do and wrote about several on the last post.
The left over list is still very long. I didn't realize how much we do.
I'm just gonna jot down the left over list.
Composting kitchen scraps. There are lists online of the things that compost well.
Make Soup- requires small amounts of meat (or no meat)and lots of veggies. (cheap)
Stir fry- again, requires small amounts of meat and lots of veggies. (cheap)
Chop bell peppers and throw in freezer before they go bad.
Freeze your grapes.
Have a pantry challenge where you use up everything in your pantry and frig until it's empty. Keeps food fresh.
Make some things from scratch on occasion. Bread, pancakes, cookies, etc.
Pinto Bean Seasoning is worth it's weight in gold. (almost)
Instead of going out and buying sweet tea, learn to make great tea at home.
Frozen fruit, like strawberries and peaches, are great to keep in freezer for oatmeal, cobblers, yogurt, etc, and won't go bad like fresh.
Want a healthy inexpensive snack for the kids? Take any oatmeal cookie recipe and alter it with chopped up nuts, seeds, dried fruit, flax, etc.
Keep light popcorn in house for kids instead of chips.
Buy Popsicles instead of ice cream.
If you have a favorite canned soup, you can add corn, cauliflower, or any other favorite veggie to make it healthier and last longer. I add cauliflower to my favorite soup and after it's cooked I mash with potato masher. It tastes like I added rice.
Recycle your metal and get paid for it.
Let your garden plants seed. Collect, Put in paper bag and label for next year.
Drip your AC into a flowerbed using PVC or bucket.
Set large buckets/trashcans at the edge of eves to collect rainwater when it rains.
Wanna build a deck? Watch Craig's list for free deck wood. Stain or paint to last.
Donate..donate...donate (garage sales aren't worth the time)
Shop thrift stores instead of department stores.
Mismatched bedding is pretty cool. We have 8 bed pillows with only two that match.
Add trim to misc pillowcases or make pillowcases from whatever, even skirt fabric.
Couch covers are an inexpensive way to totally change a room, save a couch, and clean up. Just pull it off and wash it when you want. Great if you have pets.
Learn to be handy with tools and very creative.
Paint and linens work wonders on old furniture and help make misc wood pieces work in a room.
Don't be so picky...embrace the flaws.
Get creative with clothes instead of buying more. Trim, embellish or lengthen. Doesn't fit? Cut it up and do something fun with it, like rag rugs, quilts, etc.
Your favorite foundation makeup, plus inexpensive bottle of darker color works great for adjusting color for summer.
Don't like your jewelry? Take it apart and make something else from it.
Make your own scrapbook supplies from junk mail, tags, wrappers, packaging.
Make your own paper, from junk mail or whatever, to use for scrap booking. Go online for directions.
Need dishes? Go to thrift stores and buy white dishes of all shapes and sizes, but all the same color.
Mismatched silver wear from thrift stores is fun. We all have our favorite spoon. :)
Tired of your lamp or lampshade? Add trim, paint, cover with fabric or craft paper. Hang some of that jewelry, you don't wear, on it. :)
These days everyone goes shopping for ready made everything. Why not do something yourself, have fun, save money, and be proud of what you did. It also gives you something to talk about and sometimes laugh about.
The first time I did a load of laundry, here at the house, I had the soapy water piped into a trashcan with a lid and hoses to disperse to the trees. I heard the water going into the can and walked outside to see how it was going. There were suds overflowing the can, popping the lid off, shooting up in the air.............and I was in TEARS laughing.
It's all good. :)
Have a fantastic day.
Hugs
Shannon
