Chickens, Kombucha, Gardening, and Chores. Me in a nut shell.
Good morning!
I wish I was one of those people who sleeps really well and gets up early.
Then, when I say good morning, it wouldn't be so close to lunch time.
It's a bit humid and warm this morning. The chickens have already been playing on the back deck banisters and checking the windows for me, so I went and fed them. They've become more comfortable with me and like to play and dump the food bowl. So, a good amount of seed is under the deck now. The golden hen they had with them for two days hasn't shown up in two days. I'm guessing they ousted her. I really need to do some research on chickens and figure out how they work before we venture that direction. I want a chicken that sits on my lap. Do they do that?
Yesterday I spent a good part of the day working on my husbands back office studio room. It's much more functional and organized now. That was fun.
Today I need to go through two large baskets of mending that I have and see what I can throw away.
I have two batches of Kombucha that are only on their 6th day of their first fermentation, and only 6 bottles left in the frig from the last two batches.
The one on the left is my scoby hotel.
My favorite flavors are still mango, pineapple ginger, and pineapple ginger. My recipe is basically 20% juice and 80% Kombucha for the second fermentation. I use a juicer for the fruit and I throw in slices of ginger. I ferment that for three days before we put it in the frig. The Snapple bottles don't have as tight of a seal, so they don't get as fizzy, but they get fizzy enough. We use a small tea defuser/strainer to strain out the fruit when we serve it. The fruit turns to something like an apple sauce blob on top. It looks funny.
The last batch I made was very mild before we bottled for the second fermentation. The green tea batch I made before it was fermented a couple of days longer and was stronger. It all depends on how much vinegary taste you like.
Justin made a bottle that is 80% fruit and 20% Kombucha. I'm interested in seeing how that one will taste.
BAPG= Black tea, apple, pineapple, ginger
Jessica made two with apple juice and ginger using my recipe. She said they were really good.
Can you tell I get a kick out of this? ;)
My "took forever" avocado plant looks great!
I have a second pit with roots but it broke in half. I hope it still grows.
I will plant that one soon.
All my lemon trees are doing well. Some better than others depending on if I planted a fresh seed as compared to a dry seed.
My garden is starting to produce tomatoes again and the asparagus beans are still going. I planted a few sugar snap pee seeds that I collected. We shall see if they grow.
The garden has a lot of ants. I like them for eating bug eggs, but I have more ant bites on me than I want at the moment. I need to figure out a healthy solution to cut back on our ant population.
Well.... that's all I can think of today.
I hope everyone gets to enjoy some time outside. Let me know if you see anything fun.
Hugs
Shannon
